Budget Your Furniture Expenses
A Guide to Help You Buy

By James Bucki, About.com

Office furnishings will be the first in a series of large purchases that you will make for your business. If you start purchasing office furniture without a plan, you will most definitely spend more than you have.

Create a Budget

First and most importantly, create a budget of estimated costs before you begin to purchase your office furniture. A simple spreadsheet can help you accomplish this task. In one column type all the major areas that I have listed above. Secondly, next to each area enter the furniture and quantities that you will need in that area on a separate line. Finally, go out to the internet and shop around to get the best prices. Total it all up and see if you got the money to purchase it all.

Stay Within It

If you are over budget, look for areas where you can buy some less expensive furniture now and upgrade later. Also, review the quantities that you estimated and make sure they are realistic for your business. Don't forget about saving money with used and refurbished furniture and equipment. Ultimately the decision is yours, but with careful planning and consideration, you can furnish your office to create the appearance, feel and efficiencies that you are looking for.
