Definition: Socially engineered malware uses a website that looks benign but convinces visitors to download and execute a piece of software that has malicious intent. Usually this software forwards personal information that is used in identity theft operations. Examples include:
  • Screen savers
  • Video player upgrades
  • Free games
  • Free virus removal programs
Socially engineered malware loaded a virus on my PC when I downloaded what I thought was a free screen saver.
