Definition: An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that provides a telecommunication connection to the Internet that allows a user to "be online". The connection may be provided in many different forms. It could use existing telephone lines, existing cable TV lines, new fiber optic cable may be strung or the user has to use a modem and dial a phone number. Examples of ISPs are: AOL, Earthlink, MSN, Time Warner Cable, Verizon, etc.
